Mandatory gear list

The Sydney Ultra Marathon 100km course traverses trails where it might take some time for medical and support services to reach you, therefore it is essential that every athlete carry their mandatory gear at all times.

SUM is a cupless event. Athletes are required to carry their own drinking cup, bottle, flask or hydration vest which can be used at the aid stations.

  • Must be fully charged with a live SIM card capable of making calls and accessing the internet.

  • The bandage is required as you might need to use it treat sprains or potential snake bites. We recommend this snake bandage from Amazon.

  • These can be purchased from most chemists, Bunnings, Officeworks and amazon.

  • This can be in the form of 2 × 500ml running flasks, a bladder or normal water bottles.

Please note that SUM is a cupless event.

  • Suitable Materials:

Thermal garments should be made from polypropylene, polyester, or wool. These materials are ideal because they do not retain moisture and will continue to provide insulation even when damp. The inclusion of materials like spandex or Lycra (up to 6%) is permitted for better fit and flexibility. These materials help in maintaining body temperature by trapping warm air in microscopic pockets within the fabric.

    Not Suitable Materials:

Garments made primarily of lycra (a polyester-polyurethane copolymer) and coolmax (a type of polyester designed to absorb moisture) are not suitable for this event. These materials tend to hold moisture close to the skin and facilitate substantial evaporative cooling, which can rapidly lower body temperature in cooler conditions. Additionally, all compression garments, which are predominantly made of lycra, are unsuitable as they do not provide the necessary thermal insulation. Cotton is also inappropriate for thermal wear in this event as it absorbs and retains water, keeping the moisture against your skin. This lack of moisture management can lead to significant heat loss. Cotton's structure fails to trap warm air, thereby increasing the risk of hypothermia in cold conditions. Often referred to as "The Fatal Fabric" or "Killer Cotton" in search and rescue operations, cotton has been linked to numerous hypothermia cases and should be avoided in endurance events where exposure to variable weather conditions is likely

  • Your headlamp should be robust and capable of lasting through the night.

  • Must adhere to Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 for day and night time visibility. This standard ensures that the material used is reflective and can be easily seen in poor light conditions. Runners will be required to wear this during the night

  • Jackets must have fully taped seams, not just critically taped, to ensure no water ingress. The jacket must also include a hood. The jacket must remain breathable to prevent moisture buildup from perspiration

**Weather Dependent Items. The race director will make a preliminary call with the medical team 1 week before race day if these additional items are needed. The final call will be made 48 hours before race day.

SUM 100 Course

FAQs

  • On Saturday, July 25th 2026, the SUM 100 is Sydney’s defining 100km ultra marathon. 100 kilometres. Multiple national parks. One uninterrupted course through Sydneys wildest terrain.

The race starts at St Ives Showground before entering the Wildflower Gardens, where technical single track sets the tone early. From there, the course moves into Garigal National Park, descending through the Cascades to Davidson Park along Middle Harbour. The trail follows water, sandstone and shaded gullies, before climbing onto the Magazine Trail and continuing through the Bantry Bay Reserve trails.

The middle kilometres pass through the Manly Dam loop, a broad and quiet bushland valley, before heading north via Two Creeks Track and Bungaroo Track and returning through Garigal National Park. From there, the course enters Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park, opening onto Bobbin Head Fire Trail for a long, runnable section that finishes with sweeping views over Bobbin Head Marina. The final kilometres follow Warimoo Track beside Cowan Creek, before returning to St Ives Showground to finish.

You can find a link to the course on Strava here.

You can find a link to the course on Garmin here

  • You will pass an aid station nine times in the SUM 100. Aid stations can be found at the following KM marks: 9, 23, 31, 50, 58, 77, 81, 84, 94

  • All participants are required to carry the full list of mandatory gear from start to finish throughout the race. Random gear checks will be conducted before letting you into the starting corral. Failure to carry all mandatory gear during the race will result in a time penalty or disqualification.

  • Runners will be able to park at St Ives Showground for free for the entirety of the event.

There will be no need for additional shuttle buses or to purchase a parking pass

  • The race starts at 7:00am on Saturday the 25th of July 2026.

The race will start near the Louise Lennon Pavilion at St Ives Showground. Google maps link.

  • All runners must reach the finish by 8:00 am on Sunday the 26th. Which gives the SUM 100 a 25hr cutoff

  • There will be a bag drop available at the start and finish line.

An on course bag drop will be available at Downpatrick Aid Station (58km)

  • There are multiple times where runners will need to cross a road during the SUM 100. There will be marshals at each road crossing. Please listen to their direction and do not cross the road without looking. Runners must give way to cars

  • You will be able to collect your bib pre race and on race day morning. Details will be sent out closer to the event.

  • Pacers are not allowed for the Sydney Ultra Marathons.

  • The SUM 100 is limited to 250 runners to avoid trail clog.
